What could happen if you put the auto tensioner in without the pin? or can you put it in without the pin?

i've read that it makes it hard to get the tensioner tightened all the way. i would be worried about stripping the bolts. thats exactly what the pin is for, to make it possible to get the tensioner in. did you already put it in?

You'd break the timing chain guide, or strip the threaded holes in the cylinder head.

If the car still runs, they didn't put it in with the tensioner extended, and not held by the pin.
I'd venture to say your noise is probably from the bottom end.
