You're fine. This engine can take a beating. You think what you did is bad? Try this.

On a highway pull I topped out on third gear and was looking to get into fourth..but my mounts are a little soft and i wasn't paying too much attention and I ended up in second. I did that three times now in the ownership of that car. the engine is still as strong as ever.

free-revving isn't anywhere near the end of the world for that car.

this guy above me has mechanically overreved his car a few times...lolz

anyway, OP: Pause slightly...like give it a 1/10th of a sec before you try to put it in. either that, or make it a conscious effort to hit the bottom of the clutch pedal before you grab 2nd. The slight pause will allow the synchros to do their jobs properly. 1->2 always needs a slight pause.

from what your story says... i wouldn't be surprised if you didnt even hit the rev limiter. Either way, your fine. the ecu would have cut the fuel and protected your motor
we have all missed shift before. Maybe not in the redline but we have all missed in some sort of way. it happens just be careful.

^^^Please educate us, how would valves being bent would cause a misfire code? And, is it the only code that you'll get?
well im no professional, but when the valve(s) gets bent the motor loses compression and that leads to unburnt fuel or not a complete combustion....

I actually just looked it up in the service manual. One of the causes for a misfire code at low rpm, or lower engine load, is low compression. Interesting, I would have guessed a misfire on higher loads is more evident and not so much at low loads, due bent valve(s). Now that i had the time to digest that info, it makes perfect sense to be at the lower loads.

I've done that coming off the limiter in first and missing second under 14 pounds of boost and my motor is still running fine. Not sure for how long, but it runs lol
