AP2 cold start up noise
Hello,
I have a 2005 AP2 with 15,500 miles on it.
I have a slight issue when we start up the car in cold conditions. It makes a weird groan, but it seems to happen more often when the engine is cold and the outside temperature is low (30 degrees or so). It starts up, and right before the revs drop is when it makes the sound, but only for a second.
It does not sound like a timing belt tensioner from the thread on repairing them. I can't see any issues with the serpentine belt tensioner when it is started.
I noticed in the service records that the serpentine belt has never been replaced, since its 8 years old it is one of the things on my to replace list. I was wondering if there was anything else I should consider.
Thanks for your help!

It sounds like it could be the starter hanging up making contact with the flywheel. On my ap1 it did it every cold start in the winter until I removed, disassembled, cleaned and lubed the starter. It's a lot better now but will still do it from time to time. There are posts and you tube vids on it. Hope you figure it out.

I have this every once in a while too, only when it's really cold outside. It sounds like a mid-pitched rubbing noise for about a second then goes away. Since it happens so rarely I haven't looked into it much...

As stated, probably your starter getting hung up. Not uncommon and nothing you can really do about it except replace it, although it really isn't an issue at this time. If the starter gets stuck more often, then you might want to think about replacing it.
If you don't think its the starter, perhaps posting a video will help us help you!

I DD my '06 S. Noticed this same soon as it started to get cold out. Did it all winter, based on outside temp. Read on this forum its normal, so didn't worry about it. Soon as it got warmer out, noise went away. Now that its starting to get cold out again, its back.
I agree with the others, either ignore and if it starts doing it even when warm out replace starter, or try to open up starter and lube per threads here if noise really bothers you.
I'm going with option 1, since lubing might not make noise go away and noise isn't really hurting anything.

Yeah I had a feeling that it wasn't critically important. I noticed the other day that it did not do it when it was a bit warmer out. I think I'll leave the starter alone for now. If it gets worse then I'll try lubricating it or replacing it. I will probably try posting a video sometime soon.
Thanks for all the help!
