This may sound crazy but have you recently changed shift knobs? or is your seat adjustment exactly the same as it has always been? or have you added aftermarket seat covers? All of these minor things will contribute to a different aspect in relation to your shifter and it may simply be a new learning process that is needed to unlearn what seems a very simple operation and relearn the "new".
