AP1 Transmission Rebuild/Replacement?
Hey everyone!
I just picked up my 2003 AP1 from the shop, and they told me that I need a complete transmission replacement. I originally dropped it off because I heard a rattling noise coming from underneath the car. While I would love to take the mechanics word for true, I am a bit skeptical because the past 3 cars I have taken to him have all needed transmission replacements. So I am unsure if this is just his "go-to" solution. So that prompts me to ask all you experts:
What does a transmission that needs replacement feel like? Or what does the inside look like that would make you replace it?
Has anyone rebuilt their transmission? Or is it just better to replace it with a used trans?
Thanks guys,
Trans Dummy

Maybe get a second opinion from another shop

Does it still shift fine? Engage each gear, etc. etc.? Your mechanic may recommend a new box instead of breaking down the existing one to replace a bearing.

A bad transmission shifts poorly because the synchros are worn out. The key to having a long lasting transmission is to do regular fluid changes.
The things that can go bad without affecting shifting are the bearings at the ends of the shafts.
Cracked cases are rare but do happen.

I'm guessing it's what people refer to as the reduction gear or tailshaft bearing causing more noise if it's shifting properly and not popping out. Much cheaper than a transmission
