Have you read Billmans explanation of how to check retainers...like, that, you don'r really look at the retainers?

Good luck....let us know how it works out. BTW, did you ever post to your local forum asking people if they know of any good mechanics in the area?

Lastly, those cotters are really tiny and easy to drop. Lots of guys will buy any extra couple just in case.

Inspect them before ordering retainers. If there's never been a mechanical overrev, they're probably fine.
Do a search on this site, there are pics of what it looks like when you have a cracked retainer (valve stem should stand proud above retainers, cracked retainers will cause the top of the valve to be more sunk in relative to retainer).

Could be a coil/coils, btw. I had one go intermittently earlier this year. Misdiagnosed as burned valves (due to low reading on one cyl.). Doh...

Thanks Dan, I will have Autozone or another local parts house check my coils before I get into the valvetrain.

I noticed that you did not post in your local area section for recommendations for mechanics. Although New Orleans is not exactly close, I took the liberty of posting for you. Hope you don't mind.

70k on tranny and diff fluid? Better make sure to freshen that up more often.
