Default AP1 mechanical over rev?

I'm at 125k still on original retainers with lots of 9k operation. I will leave them stock forever to keep proof to the point that this is caused by mechanical over-rev (meaning wrong-gear...not hitting the limiter).

In almost every case, the car was over-reved by the previous owner, and the new owner would never know.

It is important for ALL AP1 s2ks to have the retainers inspected. Once they are deemed healthy, they can be left alone.

By installing AP2 retainers on the intake side, you raise the over-rev RPM limit (9700, retainer crack) to a safer level.
This is a very fortuitous posting as just today after my slalom event, we were invited one runway over to try out the track day that was being held there. warmed up, jvf1 and I started getting on it. In my driving i was coming to a chicane which required a down shift from 4th to 3rd.
In the braking and down shift, i happened to glance at the tachometer, knowing it would be a down shift putting the car near the top or at the top of 3rd gear.

Under braking, the tach hit the 9000 and flashed the 9000 for a 1/2 second or less as i slowed. it DID NOT sound revved anymore than say a redline shift.

My question, mechanical over rev?

I'll be pulling the valve cover this week to check, but will there even be evidence of an over rev if indeed one did occur, this soon after. I drove home without incident 100 kms.

I have pulled the cover ever year (2) since i owned it to inspect said retainers and all are perfect.

What is the thought from those of you in the know?

thanks for your input

If you are that worried about it I would say upgrade the AP2 retainers and keepers on the intake side just for piece of mind. I would rather know something is stronger than it needs to be than have to worry about it any time I have a close call. but you might be able to see some hairline cracks with a flashlight, it's hard to say.

that's really what my ultimate plan is...just like the Billman gen4 TCT and welded upper control arm brackets. i guess the real question is, how long do i have? do i park and not drive it at all until its done? I guess there's no one answer that's right. problem is, you don't know until the valves and pistons decide to meet.

thanks for any replies.

after looking at what the speed was coming into that chicane, there was no way I was travelling anymore than 145 kph (90 mph) as I downshifted 4th to 3rd. Since on the AP1 top speed in 3rd is 153 kph (95 MPH), and being under braking, I believe no harm done.

But regardless, i'll be pulling the valve cover as usual this winter and inspecting the retainers.

make sense?

AP1 3rd gear redline is more 87-89mph range.

I know your scenario and I am quite certain you did not over-rev.

Give it 200 miles or so then take a look, I'm sure you will be fine.

So, I'm writing to post an update to my findings after pulling the valve cover. I drove another 2000 kms since the above question was posed- ultimately deemed a non over rev situation.

Here is what i found. The first picture is the before picture from 2 years ago. The following pictures are from today.

BEFORE

TODAY

Any further thoughts? I think they look the same as when i first pulled the valve cover 2 years ago. The "lip" between the valve keeper and the cotter within still have the same feel to them when i drag the dental pick over the junction.

thanks again.

Have a close look at the retainer on cylinder 4, the front one (in other words count the 7th intake retainer back from the front of the car).

This retainer in 95% of cases is always the first to go and in the worst condition.

thanks for the advice- always appreciated. I still have the valve cover off (but covered the workings with a clean plastic sheet and closed the hood).
