Default ap1 head on my ap2

Hey guys,

just got done searching regarding this topic, but i still have some questions about putting the ap1 head on an ap2. I have an opportunity to pick up an ap1 head with 46k on it for a great price, to mate to my ap2 with 42k on the odometer.

I've seen that the specs between the cams are different, with the ap1 having a slightly higher/longer lift/duration. I'm assuming this is a little more efficient at higher RPM's?

Also, I have seen mentioned a couple of times that the retainers are different? something about being vertical vs horizontal? I just want to know if the head will literally bolt right on, and whether anyone has done it before and can speak from first hand experience, as I didn't see that in any of the threads that came up for my search.

I'm not doing this for power or to "be able to rev to 9k." I've had a bad misfire and pretty shitty compression on this car that I'm trying to solve, as I believe it to be a bent valve(or more) in my stock head. I'll do a leak down before I buy the ap1 head to be certain...

Anyway, will the head bolt up? what else will I need to do this? just an upper engine gasket set?

Thanks for the insight

The heads are the same for all NON-DBW S2000s. Only the cams and a few others parts (spring and retainers) are different.

It should, but I want to add the AP2 head is stronger than the AP1. Everyone has their own reasons, but I wouldn't go backwards IMO. I would install a new head gasket while you had it off.

well, as I mentioned, I'm looking at getting a full ap1 head for only $300. I'm certain any work I have done on this head will cost me significantly more.

I mean, is there REALLY any danger? I think with the mileages are so similar then it shouldn't be too much of a problem if the head is actually healthy and in perfect working order

Shawn

The head casting is the same for 00-05. The cams, spring and retainers are different between the AP1 and AP2. The cams are the real difference as the other parts are minor and exchangeable between AP1 and AP2.

So in SHORT. Yes, It is bolt and go.
