lol, I swear it takes me about 5 minutes to read my oil level. First you have the alternate readings on the dipstick, then after an oil change the oil colour is so clear it is hard to see. I pull out my magnifying glass to actually see the levels on the dipstick. Doesn't help that I'm getting old and my eyesight is crap as well.
It's always freakin hard for me to read it too. I look at it 2-3 times as well!!

An old racer showed me a trick to make it easier, since in racing you always have clean oil. Immediately after pulling it, turn the dipstick upside down. As soon as you do that the oil will begin to flow down (up) the dipstick. Before it starts moving along the "x"'s though, it will pool slightly at the highest (lowest) level. Makes it way easier to read. Try it and you'll see what I mean.

'built in error reading'...this sounds almost like they designed it this way, certainly not the case, or is it?

no, maybe I chose a confusing choice of words there. The error is built into the engine design no two ways about it. It wasn't done on purpose as it wouldn't really have any real purpose. But the Honda engineers surely knew about it and chose to proceed without making any changes over the 10 year run. Perhaps they couldn't change it or they felt it wasn't a big issue. How's that ?

A little trick to make it easier to read your dipstick in low light or with bad eyes. after you pull the dipstick out lay it on a paper towel (Blue shop towels work even better), then while holding in in the same spot vertically roll it one turn. You will be able to see a dark spot on the paper towel that is easier to see than on the dipstick.

that's a pretty good trick, I've always got the blue paper towels around my garage too. Good idea

Try different things before changing oil brands. First change the PCV to see if that helps. The next step would be a catch can. Finally I would change to another brand if oil consumption remains the same. I burned about a quart of Mobil 1 in about 4k of driving like a grandma. I switched to Motul and saw an increase in consumption as the life of the oil increased. I went through a quart in the last 1k before my oil change so It burned about 2 quarts in 5-6K. Now I'm on Royal Purple and it's about 2 quarts in 6-7K. Next up is Amsoil.

i had ALMOST the exact same problem except it wasn't burning that much oil but enough to keep me concerned bout it. so i just bought krankvents and it helped a lot. i burn half as much now.

try the krankvents op, i don't think there's a problem with the engiine at all. gl
