AP1 burning extreme amounts of oil
#21
I'm not new to cars or anything like that this my 14th car. I just come from trucks and Toyotas. This is just the most precisely build engine I've owned so I'm seeing what my options are since this my daily driver. Maybe it's time to sell off my Toyota turbo engine that's just laying around :/

Sure its 'possible' in some situations, however at 142k i have my doubts that your pistons are completely reusable, nor are the bores completely round and even if they were, $400 for a set of pistons pales in comparison to the $2500+ in labor you would be spending to have the engine removed from car, torn down, block honed and assembled and then put back in car, so at that point it just make sense to cover your ass and replaced some wearable parts so you don't have another failure in 10-50k miles as well as guarantee your engine runs smooth and free from continuing to burn oil once back together. Your already spending the same on labor regardless, might as well replace the old parts with new. Id even replace the oil pump which is $300 from Honda.
The more you weigh things out, the more and more it makes sense to just buy a low mile used F22 and drop it in. They are better engines, no building needed. Updated piston and ring design, updated banjo bolts for added oil cooling on pistons out of vtec, updated/stronger valve retainers and keepers and more precise block/head manufacturing/decking. Those engines don't use any oil unlike the F20 counterpart and as a result should last quite a bit longer if this car is a keeper for you. Plus the added trq is quite noticeable and appreciated.
Im a Toyota truck guy myself too. Ive owned 3. Current shared DD is a MY00 Tacoma 4x4. 2" lift with 33/12.50 on factory wheels. Added on Bull bar with twin KC lights up front. I love my truck, clean modded, nothing over the top just enhancing whats already there to make a little more aggressive. 185k on it and haven't done to do a thing to it, engine burns 0 oil in 5k mile oil changes. 2.7 inline 4. I will likely never sell this vehicle either, just too good, and they just don't make cars/trucks like they used to and never will again. Too much money, complications and unnecessary tech going in these days.

Okay. Thanks for the help guys. As much of a headache as this car has been already I should of gotten rid of this engine awhile ago. I know the f22's are alot better, just expensive. But then again I got the car for only $5k to start with so what's another $3500. Guess I'll start looking for a new engine and digging my crane out of storage.

04-05 is engine you're looking for, it's a straight swap.

You just need the longblock, OP. You can swap throttle bodies or manifolds regardless of DBW or not.
Only 06+ engines are DBW. The 04-05 is a fairly simple swap. The only noteable difference I can think of is the fuel feed line.
