Default anyone replaced the thermostat themselves?

Hi,

As title has anyone removed the thermostat themselves from underneath and how did you do it?

Two bolts and did you leave the hose on, what tools you use etc?

Thanks in advance

I replaced mine when a piece of aluminum weld jammed the thermostat open from my aftermarket rad.

I did it from the engine bay. I drained the rad, removed the intake, accessory belt, and alternator. I pulled off the hose at the connector, then removed the two bolts holding it in place. Once that was off I put in the thermostat (make sure it is aligned properly with the pin upwards), closed it all up and torqued the two bolts to spec, and then re-installed everything in reverse. An air ratchet really helped to get the two bolts removed but you could still do it with a ratchet and some short extensions it will just take more time.

Thanks Billman, i believe its possibly sticking.

Basically, when the car is more than fully warmed up, i noticed something was awry when the AFR was really rich and was jumping about when in WOT. Monitored the coolant temp (via obd2 port) and its up from its usual rock steady 86-88c, its fluctuates slowly between 94-105c (generally around a median of 95c) at one point 112/114c! but didn't put 4 bars on until 114c!

Have looked at the expansion tank and thats way way past the max mark, and with the car running the top rad hose is hot but the bottom is cold/warm'ish - makes me think the thermostat is okay though well for now.

The same thing happened about 5 week ago and just bled this system, everything was okay until it happened again. Bled the system again but this time bought a new rad cap as i thought there could be leak esp when coolant sitting around cylinders.

Cheers

I did mine from the bottom. I was easy, just 2 bolts and left the hose on the housing. make sure to that the little rubber tip/flap is oriented the correct way so it can seal 100%.
