turns out it was bad SHELL gas.
i can't believe the dealer tried to pass it off as stretched valves. it would have been better for them to say that they have no idea what is wrong than to try and give me a $3400 repair bill for an unnecessary job.

Hope y'all have gotten your problems fixed on this thread. An update, the valve adjustment kept the CEL at bay for about a week, but never really got rid of the "puffing" sound from the exhaust at idle. The next step was new fuel injectors, which my dealer worked with Honda on !
So far the idle is smooth as new with not a hint of misfire. I think I may have gotten into some bad gas when we had hurricane related shortages here in Texas, which really screwed up the injectors. I'm just glad to have her back and not be staring at the glowing CEL !
