Correct me if im wrong Rob, but I think my 2001 GTi VR6 has electronic locking diff...its called EDL (electronic differential lock)...it works very well, especially with FWD cars

I don't think so Ian. You have an open front diff and I don't know what EDL stands for but it could be German. I think it's just traction control.
Heh, my Corrado had traction control, and it never worked once. I could light the tires up (one or both) at any time without it kicking in.

Actually, i just checked out the VW website...the MKIV's got
ASR - Anti Slip Regulation...1.8T only
EDL - Electronic Differential Lock...1.8T only
and
ESP - Electronic Stablity Program...VR6 models only
http://www.vw.com/gti/features.htm
I wonder why for 2002 only the 1.8T gets EDL??
Apparantly when I drive the GTi, i can turn off the ASR, but the EDL is always working...When i get the tires to break loose in corners I hear a clicking sound, somthing like an ABS modulator sound....I think thats the EDL...
