Default any options for rearend replacements?

i thought i heard that you can put in an rx7 rearend but i probably misread that. the major problem i see with the S is that it has a weak rearend. anyone know what you can do to have a stronger one?

There is much speculation that the RX7 rear end would work, with some fabrication. As far as I know no one has done the research to see how much work it would be.

As for strengthening the rear end, there are a few threads going on right now that discuss some of the options. I personally have done:

an older vette rear may be a cheaper option than an rx7, it is also independent and probably fairly simple to fab, but im kinda just guessing.

What's the stock gear ratio? I know the current Vette's is something like 3.4 - 3.6...a far cry from the 4.10 stock S2000 final gear ratio.

yeah it is in the high 3 range most are 3.55 i belive but the gearing can easily be replaced richmond makes gear sets, you can even go higher than 4.11, i belive 4.86 or even higher if ur not into top speed. i wasnt realy talking about newer rearends, i mean even a C4 vette, or as far back as the mid 70s a weird concept a 78 corvette rear in a 2000-2002 S2000 but it is probably possible, anything is. my freind has a 79 and its independent is pretty simple, and probably can be had from a junk yard for fairly cheap (i know im risking sounding like a hick or trailer scum) because they are pretty plentiful., the shafts going to each wheel i belive are tubed (like mini drive shafts) so they may be able to be shortened fairly easily to match the track width of an "S" so i dont know maybe some of you fabricators out there (or people with alot of money that know fabricators) can come up with somthing to cure this accilies (sp) tendin of the S2000.

Aren't the vette rear ends rather LARGE? I don't think there is much room for a larger unit in the S2000.

im not sure of the exact dimensions. im not saying it will bolt right in, obviously, it will require modification. and it is rather large, the ring gear is 8.5 inches, but with size comes strength.

Sounds like it could be MUCH larger than the stock diff. The stock diff is already a tight fit, and this would require shortening the propeller shaft and both axles.

If you guys are serious about trying a different rearend, then don't reinvent the ..... rearend , check out what the Monster Miata (5.0 V8 conversion) guys have been doing for years. I think they use a late model Ford T-Bird unit or some sh!t and it's supposed to work fine (plenty of after-market ratios
