These are for cars that you have to pull things apart to change the oil. Ours is so easy it is pointless do do it that way.

I agree.....it's pointless for our cars...you don't even need a jack. Stock height cars can drive right up on ramps. Plus being under the car forces you to look around and spot any other potential leaks/trouble areas.

I work on MINI's (BMW) for a living. This is how we do all of our oil changes. When I replace an oil pan gasket I suck the oil out, like mentioned. When I remove the pan there is always some oil left in the pan. I don't see how using this method would remove more oil than removing the drain plug, but maybe on a MINI it's different?

It is MUCH less messy though. You can never get 100% of the oil out either.

i learned that if you're worried about getting all the oil out the best thing to do is flush a little bit of new oil after all the old oil has drained.

The only thing I would use it for is in the event of an overfill, like the Merc story above. One issue I thought of was if you don't ever loosen the drain plug, the galvonic corrosion effect might be so bad that it would be really hard to get off if you needed to and you might risk craking the housing on the pan to get it off.
