Signature Series 0w-30.
Amsoil's website states that it replaces all 0w, 5w, and 10w-30 oils.
Viscosity rating: 173
Wear: 0.406 on a independent 4 ball test
Dominator Series 10w-30
This oil weight is what is recommended in our cars.
Viscosity rating: 161
Wear: 0.480 on a independent 4 ball test
I usually use Royal Purples 5w-30 XPR edition oil. After doing some additional research, i dont want to use it any more.
I have already read the Amsoil's website, and im not sure what would be best for my car. other than obvious rating that i listed above.
IM LOOKING FOR A REASON WHY ONE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER. help me choose. Please state your opinions and any facts that you might know regarding this topic.
Lastly, each cost the same, so thats not an issue. And my oil change is coming up in about 500 miles. i cant buy it locally, i have to order it.
I did a run on their 5w40 last season, loved how quiet it made the car sound, very smooth running. After a used oil analysis I want to get the iron wear levels down a bit if possible, and I'm switching over to Amsoil 5w30 for the next year. I think it is one of their best oils, it flows well at cold temps, I like the hot temp viscosity, decent noack volatility evaporation number, good high temp high shear number and 4 ball wear number. Their 10w30 is a great oil, I'd run that but I like how the 5w30 flows faster at cool temps, which should be good to get lower iron wear numbers, at least that's my theory. I do like the 0w30 SSO but it has higher NOACK volatility and slightly less warm temp viscosity. You can't go wrong with any of those oils but I think their 5w30 provides the best all around protection. All in the 100% synthetic line of course.
thank you. would you say the 0w-30 would flow faster than the 10w-30. really how much different are they? and you got me with NOACK VOLATILITY....what is it?
Here is a chart I made a few weeks ago from the information on Amsoils website. I switched from m1 10/30 to Amsoil ATM 10/30 on a suggestion from someone on here (maybe SpitfireS?) that it will curb oil consumption. It has slowed it considerably.
You'll notice that the ATM has the most favorable scores on the 4 ball test and high temp/high shear viscosity, and ties on lowest volatility weight loss.
Column H is a little different because it is their racing oil and is tested differently apparently
This is the second SSO fill I'm using now.
(Did you only drive 4000 miles or so?)
No.
32000km.
First OCI was 23000km (no UOA)
The temps were below 0C last week and I'm on the highway within a mile after starting.
No problemo.
Ok.. I keep it around 4k rpm till I see 3 bars but the engine runs as if its hot from the moment it starts.
And.. don't forget the 3000 rpm cold start peak.
Sometimes I feel sorry for the 10W-30 engines in cold weather.
where are you located, and do you drive in cold temps ?. 0w30 would flow the quickest on start up and start up is typically where the majority of wear occurs, even worse on cold starts.
I noticed they added the European 5w30 to their website recently, seems like an odd oil which they describe as low viscosity yet it has the highest viscosity of any of the their 30 weights, likely to get the hThs rating they need for Euro. They are promoting it as low SAPS as well.
Yes, I've done it a couple of times and it came out with no issues whatsoever.
The concept is that the starting point of 0 weight minimizes wear upon start up.
I've didn't notice any extra consumption of oil either. I change my oil every 7,500 miles and once I transitioned to synthetic back at about 10k I've never had to add any oil between oil changes.
