i blew my DIFF about 6 months ago, and what you discribe sounds like what happened to me, exept mine actually cracked the pumkin and it was leaking from the huge hole that it made so it was easy to determine what the isue was lol, none the less sorry for your loss it would be a perfect time to get a reinforced housing and some gears
