Default All 4 Coil Packs Bad?!?

Alright, so i really don't know where to start. About a week ago i went out to start my car for work in the morning and i live in Maryland so its freezing, basically she struggled starting which i figured hey winters coming cold weather and sports car don't mesh understandable but then when she warmed up on my way to work i heard loud back fires, engine bog, loss of power at lower rpms...literally sounded like a WRX Sti. Then my CEL came on and i got worried so i then preceded to take her to my buddys shop where we ran the codes and i had 6! They were misfiring on Cylinder 1, 2, 3, and 4 then random misfire and a honda misfire! I basically freaked out. My friend said no worries Coil Packs so we swapped them out of his S and put them in mine drove the car for 15 minutes ran smooth (No CEL). So im assuming thats the issue correct? If so i would love to know why it happened and also if ANYONE has a clue to where i can get them at a very reasonable price and good quality!! I checked honda and they wanted like 130 per coil pack and i am only 19 and don't have a ton of money so somebody please help and explain everything!!!

Thanks a ton,
Kyle

Did you look at Rock Auto?
They have a DENSO Part # 6732300 Coil on Plug for $82.99
I don't know if that's a good price or not but I have gotten some good deals at Rock Auto.

I find it hard to believe you suddenly have 4 bad coil packs......not happening! You mention 6 codes(?). Hopefully you wrote them down. Here's what to look at:

P0300 - this code is a random misfire and will be found with one or more of the next 4
P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire
P0302 - Cylinder 2 misfire
P0303 - Cylinder 3 misfire
P0304 - Cylinder 4 misfire

So that takes care of 5 of 6 codes thrown. The 6th code is the key:
P0107, P0108,P1129, or P1129 - issue with MAP sensor. Very common and most likely. Due a search here for "MAP whack" to fix
P0131, P0132 - Issue primary oxygen sensor. Usually the cell blinks (but you didn't mention that so I' m still MAP wacking....Most likely Map......

Other codes related to misfire:
p0171 & P0172 - fuel metering
P0335 & P 0336 - crankshaft position sensor
P0505 Idle control
P1259- VTEC
P1361,P1362,P1366 or P 1367 Tdc Sensor
P1519 Idle air control

So the question is....what was the 6th code

Actually, I believe (admittedly I have no hard proof) that the ECU and coil packs can get themselves into a vicious cycle: a coil pack going bad causes ECU to overcompensate by driving it harder, eventually burning out both the coil pack and ECU.

Regardless, here's how to save money on the coil packs: there are 3 Honda part numbers at very different prices, but all the parts are interchangeable for the S2000.
2000-2003 P/N: 30520-PCX-007, ~$90 ea. online
2004-2005 P/N: 30520-PNA-007 & -RRA-007, ~$45 ea. online
2006-2009 P/N: 30520-PZX-007, ~$67 ea. online

The '04-'05 part is the same as in the RSX-S, which is probably why it's cheaper. Many folks here (me included) have been running them in our F20Cs for a long time now with no issues.

^^ Best way to save money on coils is to buy them used.

You can get a set of 4 low mileage fully working coils for $100 or less.

But my main issue is what if i do buy used ones and it happens again?! . Also this is directed to UTAH or whoever, now your saying it cant be the coil packs because i did take all 4 off of my friends S put them in my car and she ran like brand new so we assumed that was the issue correct?

My questions....what were the codes? Another would be "how do the suspect packs work in your friends car". While I'm not aware of the condition Twohoos is referring to I have complete confidence on his input based only following his posts over the years......

Codes or how do the packs run in your friends car?

I'm with Utah, try put your old coil on your friend's S or swap back to yours again before you buy coilpack. If it turns out to coil, buying an used is your best bet.

Have you guys also check plugs as well?

Thanks Utah.

Agree that the best way to isolate the problem to the coil packs is to try them in a known-good car. Ideally, swap them in one by one.

My theory is based on my own head-scratching after ultimately resolving an intermittent misfire a year ago. My symptoms were far more subtle at first -- just a little miss here and there, usually under load at low rpm; no CEL or codes. Then it completely failed w/ CEL and a couple misfire codes. After troubleshooting, the shop replaced two clearly bad coil packs and a bad ECU, after observing that one of the bad packs was actually being over-driven (the shiny black top of the pack would actually glow blue and get hot to the touch, while the others stayed cool and black). Everything else checked out -- wiring ok, plugs ok, fuel ok, injectors ok, etc. etc.

I kept all the parts, and later did individual substitutions of the bad coil packs and the ECU, verifying that indeed they were all bad, i.e. using any one of them caused misfires of varying severity.

So what went bad first, the coil packs or ECU? Impossible to say for sure, but we know the ECU has some adaptability built in, which is what led me to my theory.
