Default Air Flow

Has anyone removed the center divider on the OEM air box to help increase air flow? I am trying to get better air intake without adding a 3rd party intake. Any advice is welcome. Thanks, JimmyB

That won't increase airflow. If you look at the inlet and the inside of the box lid you'll notice that thewall doesn't have an effect on actual flow.

I suspect it is chambered more for noise control.

Besides "noise" tuning, I think that first chamber doubles as a water catcher if you look at the way the inlet is designed. The limiting factor in airflow is the square area of the narrowest part of the air intake (the part that just enters the airbox. I'm of the opinion that the engine gets all the air it needs with the stock box. Mind you, itcan benefit from getting cooler air and it can even benefit from getting the air more efficient (and that's where aftermarket intakes come into play). If you want to retain the stock box, "Coastal Metals" has a new kit that will bring ambient air into the box. However, it will necessitate cutting a hole in the stock box.

Don't forget Mingster's cold air duct, if I remember correctly there's no cutting involved at all!

Correct, there is no cutting but the intake air horn and slanted airguide must be removed.

UL can chime in here, but during our dyno tuning session we saw the intake air pressure drop several psi as rpms increased, indicating that there's definitely room for better breathing. In fact, I'd wager this is the principal mechanism by which the Injen/AEM-style CAIs add power.

the Injen/AEM intakes also change the length of the intake, which changes the effect of the pulse waves coming from the engine. length tuning affects at what rpm you'll see the effects from the intake. shorter intake gives more benefits at higher rpm, longer intake benefits more at lower rpm.
