Hmmm well in my mind paying $40 for a tow is better than paying $10,000 for a new engine.

I've driven in plenty rain without a bypass valve without any problems.

So did I, plenty of storms/rain, but it eventually happens. I wouldn't be paranoid about it, but you should have a healthy concern. Rattling the intake after a storm or rain (to check for water), especially if you car is on an incline doesn't seem like much work to me.

The rain chanel has a hole in it that is directly over the filter. The problem seems to be related to cars standing still rather than being underway. I sugest you plug the hole as I did. No problems.

Can you post a pic of the hole you filled and it's location. This seams like a real easy solution or easy insurance. No downside.
