Advice on Error 1259 vtec failure
Hi All,
I recently had the check engine light come on right when I hit 6000 RPMs. The engine cut off just like it wasn't at 3 bars and the rev limiter had cut it off.
This originally happened when my local Honda dealer was closed so I had a friend hook his shops computer to it and it showed error 1259 Vtec engagement failure.
I took the car to Honda today and told them to please replace the pressure switch and the sellinoid (spelling?). They agreed to try that first so on Monday I will have the new switch and Sellinoid.
The Vtec failure was very intermittment and if I manually would pull the pressure switch off, clean it off, and put it back on then vtec seemed to be good to go.
I am curious if anyone else has had this failure and if I am pointing Honda in the right direction by having the pressure switch and sellinoid replaced first?
Thanks,
Dean

Low oil level, a sticking soleniod, clogged VTEC inlet screen, bad pressure switch or solenoid can all cause this DTC. It is not strictly a electronic failure. If cleaning the switch cleared up your problem temporarily, I would be curious where the debris that is clogging the switch and most likely inlet screen is coming from. Oil should not have any debris large enough to restrict anything. You do change your oil frequently? If the oil is not changed frequently, sludge and varnish deposts build up inside the engine and can cause many engine problems.

Slows2k:
Oil level is full. The oil is changed every 2000 - 2500 miles. I have had the car for just under 3 years and have always had the oil changed around 2500 miles. It only has 22k miles on it.
The switch really wasnt dirty but I make it a habit to make sure the connections are clean if I unplug a switch just as a matter of habit.
The engine is spotless and their is no debris at all. I should have more accurately stated that I fiddled with the switch as I really just unplugged it, wiped it off, and plugged it back in to make sure it was secure.
I just have a feeling it is the solenoid or the switch. I guess I will wait and see how it runs after Monday since they are putting on a new switch and solenoid.
I do appreciate your feedback.

Switches have been known to crap out. Most of my experience with this DTC is from poorly maintained cars. You would be surprised how many people don't change there oil. I asumed that you where removing the switch from the housing, not just unplugging the connector. If there was debris blocking the inlet to the switch, You have a real big motor problem, like bearings coming apart. With your maintenance schedule you should have no such problems. The DTC sets when ever the PCM sees 2 on or off signals from the switch or solenoid. The 2 inputs should always be opposite, 1 is on while the other is off.
