Advice on 1st oil change after break-in
I've read various opinions on how long to leave the first oil in before changing it on a new S. My oil is starting to get kind of dirty, and I've added one quart (at about 1100 miles) and it's about ready to need a second quart (at about 2100).
My question is: should I get the oil changed at 3,750 (my normal interval), or wait longer? My car has probably qualified for "severe conditions" due to being at the track last Friday.
Is it accurate that the original oil is nothing special? I will be replacing it with Castrol GTX 10w30 (that's what I added when I was low at 1100 miles).
Thanks -
Kathy

Even without tracking the car, most of us would fall under "severe" conditions. Change it at the earlier mileage. If your oil is getting dirty, that should be a sign that you should not wait for the longer mileage interval anyway. As for the factory oil being special. Some say yes, some say no (I'm one of those) but in any case, you will have had it in there for the prescribed time by 3750 miles so dump it. Just keep it topped up with whatever you've been adding and what you plan to change it with is just fine. When the oil comsumption decreases and levels off (or at the 10K - 15K mile on odo), consider going with synthetic if you can justify the price, keeping in mind that your interval should stay the same even with synthetic.

One thing I wish I had done before my 1st oil change was to change the oil filter, since it is probably full of crap. You can change the oil filter without changing the oil. You will not loose much oil, but you will probably have to add 1/2 qt. after putting the new filter on.

I split the difference and went to 5000 miles before changing. I wanted to leave the factory oil in just in case it was special. At 5000 mile I changed the differential oil to Mobil 1. Suggest that you do the same, the diff oil was trashed.

The synthetic went into the differentail, not the engine. I currently use Kendal GT1 and am using oil at the rate of 1 qt every 3000 miles. Every differental that I know of that has had the oil changed at around 5000-10000 miles has had really funky oil removed. The car has 22000 miles with track time and is running like a top.

Thanks, Fred. I wouldn't have thought of changing the diff oil yet since I don't think it's required per maintenance schedule until 15k. But if you changed yours early and it was looking nasty, it certainly can't hurt...

Also keep in mind that Honda does not have a dedicated diff fluid for our cars. If you go there, they will give you what they put in the diff of their AWD CRV and is not really the same as what's in there now. If you can, I suggest getting 1 qt. of Mobil 1 75W90 synthetic gear lube and give it to whoever does your work. Or, if you do would like to try it yourself:
