Default 8k rpm 2nd gear grind

I've read up on the 2nd gear grind and know it's a common issue. But I didn't see much about 2nd gear being "locked out" afterward.

I have a MY05 and occasionally get the 1-2 grind at 3-3.5k shifts. But an even bigger issue is at 8k rpms and 1-2 grinds, then second gear becomes "locked out" and I have to wait for the tranny to cool down a bit before I can even budge it into 2nd, or 1st for that matter. One day it happened and I had to put the car in 3rd because 1st and 2nd were locked out. If I let the tranny cool for a few hours, 1st and 2nd become "unlocked". I switched to Redline MT-90 4k miles ago and it helped for a while, but now the problem has returned. So I'm thinkin the issue is going to be something more expensive than buying new tranny fluid.

Check your clutch fluid + bleed your system. Thats your best bet, if that doesnt fix it; your synchros are probably toast. Try rev-matching to get it into the right gear instead of banging it in.

Ikey is right, it could be a worn sychro.

But things you can do:
Try to replace the clutch fluid and bleed it good.
If MT-90 can't fix it, try other fluid such as sychromesh oil.
If not, time to open and replace it. Avoid slamming it next time.

if your transmission is only locked out of 1st and 2nd gear, you clutch fluid is fine. replace your transmission fluid and see if that helps. clutch fluid should have nothing to do with it.
if it grinds when shifting into 2nd at 3k-3.5k rpm, your synchros are probably done.

Poor shifting leads to worn out syncros - I'd look at how your shifting and see if you need to modify it for the car.

Swap trans fluids again. Try the synchromesh. Didn't Honda make some kind of change to their MTF? Many factors play into shifting smoothly, from timing, to seat position etc. Try adjusting some of those to reduce any problems. The S transmission, like many sports cars isn't designed to be constantly power shifted over and over. In my opinion, its one of the best designed transmissions for a true driver's car.

thanks for all the help guys. I'm gonna try new fluid and pay attention to how I'm shifting and if that doesn't do it, then I'm gonna have the tranny pulled.
