45k miles unknown previous oil can i go fully syn
first off i'm new here but i'm a computer technician so i have used the search function extensively. i know you can go from fully synthetic to min oil...and i know at about 10k miles if you want to switch to synthetic you should do it then. i just bought my car used( and i totally f'ing love my baby )and i'm a big fan of synthetic oils. after reading about mobil 1 vs amsoil i'm going to start using amsoil in my car. is there anything i should check for thats a sign i shouldn't put synthetic in at 45k miles? i've read so many topics and posts my eyes are bleeding and noone flat out answered the question, "Can i goto full synthetic if i have more than 10k miles on the car but less then say 60-75k miles(engine considered old enough to not do it)???" any help would greatly be appreciated...i plan on using amsoil fully synthetic 10w30 and the honda pcx filter(and changing all the other fluids). is there anything i should watch out for?

sure you can switch to synthetic. you should probably change the tranny fluid and the rear differential fluid as well.
tranny, try the new 2007 OEM Honda MTF. silver bottle, white cap.
rear diff- depends on your climate, but most seem to use the Mobile 1 75w90 GL5 synthetic gear oil.
ps. try the Sticky at the top of the page regarding "fluids" and also the "how to" sticky

That choice makes me think you do not live in a cold climate.
If so, then I would use a straight SAE 90 GL-5 hypoid gear oil for the diff, as recommended by Honda.
BTW, Honda does NOT recommend anything else for the diff (as they do for the engine oil when you live in a colder climate => 5W-40.)
Honda Marine devision has it (its used in outboard motors) and there is another option: LE-607
Honda Automotive doesn't have this oil IIRC.

couple thing you want to check, first if you have a motor oil leak now, expect a bigger leaks if you switch to syn. oil due to it's finer molecule and deeper peneration.
second, once you switch over to syn. oil, make sure you check the dipstick more often, sometime it burns oil just like dino. oil, sometime people went thru a quart or more with syn. oil.

I'd say you are right at the edge of being OK...maybe. Unfortunately, you won't know until you run synth for a couple thousand miles and then discover leaks.
Back in the 80's I was an early adopter of synth. Put it in a car that had been run on dino for 7yrs & 60k miles. By the next oil change, it was leaking like a sieve from both main seals...thought it was just bad luck that both went out at the same time. Sometime later was listening to Click & Clack where they talked about this problem and recommended to stick with dino oil if the car has some milage to avoid seals from leaking.

If you mean oil leaking out of the engine (on the floor or on other engine components) then I would say: fix it, no matter what oil you want to use.
IMO one should always keep an eye on the oil level, again, no matter what oil you use.
