Default 4.57's and travelling long distances

Hey all just wondering how you 4.57 owners out there like the S during long drives? Especially those with exhausts (single or dual). How many miles have you logged onto your S with the 4.57 gears and how many miles do you have total? THe reason I ask is about the wear and tear issue of the motor being held at 4.9-5k rpms at 80mph. Ive read that lugging the engine in 6th (stock gearset) is more harm than good since it takes more power to get the S up to speed and that with the 4.57's it makes it easier on the engine, but 4.5-5k rpms seems pretty high for driving 300-1000 mile trips. how many miles do you get out of a full tank? Any input would be appreciated. And if you could please state if you have an AP1 or AP2 and what your rpms are at doing 65mph and 80mph thanks.

I have 4.57 gears with an Invidia dual cat back (I actually have the stock resonator back on now) on my AP1. My commute is about 120 miles per day. My cruising speed is 80 mph and my rpms are right about 5k if I recall. I have been running this set up for roughly 9k miles now. My odometer is just over 50k now and still running strong. I have had zero problems with this set up but I keep my fluids clean and I'm sure that helps. When I had the Invidia resonator on it the drone in the car was wearing on me. With the stock resonator on I still have a loud exhaust (which I like) and the drone was seriously reduced.

The 4.57s should have been an option with this car imo. It is the best mod I have done to date.

I did purchase a commuter car a couple of months back, only because I was putting so much miles on my S. I would drive it every single day if my commute wasn't so damn long.

I drove from Chattanooga to Fort Myers and back a couple of weeks ago and I have no complaints. That's the first long trip I've made since the gears were installed. MY00 w/AP1 tranny.

It could be all in my head but it seems the car is just a bit more responsive in those situations in freeway driving when you need another 10 mph in a hurry.

I got between 24 to 27 mpg.

An engine at operating temp doesn't really wear at all and being at 5k rpm for hours on end with a F20/22C is nothing to worrie about.
Gearbox etc? It all spins 11.5 % more.
No big deal.

Turn up the stereo

AP1 @ 5000 rpm = 132 km/h.

It is not in your head.. it is all true
Driveability in all situations went up with the 4.57's IMO.

What was your highway MPG before the gear swap? Mine was between 30 and 32 MPG on that trip.

About the same as you're getting. The best I ever got was 34.

It seems like I get better mileage on the trip south. Must be downhill.

You'll have a PM later.

I got 4.57's too and the extra noise is noticable but liveable with. but if you have th gears and exhuast nosie shouldnt be a problem at all. Preformace is VERY noticable with the gears. I raced a s2k with exhuast and intake, and Im all stock with only gears and I pulled about a car and a half! I love the gears the best bang for your buck if your going N/A for sure.

I have a quick question....if you install the 4.57 on a stock S, do you need to change anything in the diff.? I guess for 6-700 that might be the first mod I do.

Or you could do 4.77s and put a bigger smile on your face . I have driven the car from PA to NH and I also do a 75 mile one way commute once in a while on with the S. Just did a trip from PA to VA and got 28mpg and there were a few triple digit periods. I rev at 5200 rpm in 6th @ 80 mph. The gears have been in the car for 10k with no problems. 0-60 is a hoot

Unless you decide to FI in the future.

I think 4.57s are the best gear ratio for FI, IMHO.

15k on the gears in mixed driving. Quite a few 350 mile road trips. No problems.

Found the diff whine a little annoying at 80mph @ 4.5k.

Would drive with earplugs on the long trips.

But recently did the QuietCar sound dampening mod this Fall.

It's great in combination with the gears. You can still hear the motor, gears, and exhaust quite well... but at a level that doesn't require hearing damage or getting to the max output of the stock stereo. I'm boosted if that makes a difference... some of my vehicle noise was due to the blower.
