4.57 gears installed... pics of contact patch
Here are pics of my contact patch after we used prussian blue on the gears and turned it a few times. not dead center on but very damn close.
we got this after putting together and taking apart the ring/pinion about 4 times. our total shim depth was .103 inches. backlash was about .006.
these were taken on a camera phone so I apologize for the resolution.
this pic is ok, but looks a bit off. i had a bad angle.
this pic is much better and much more in line with the gears. you can see the contact patch.
thoughts?

the problem with moving the ring toward the pinion is that it would extremely tighten the backlash. we are already at .005 to .006.
i would hate to go any tighter.
with the previous contact patch the pattern definitely was at the very top of the teeth and also too much heel. after adding more shim depth and resetting our backlash, we got this contact patch which is much more centered and the pattern more even. it would be nice to have it just a bit lower in the teeth, but it still looked very close to what richmond had suggested.
also richmond said that if we get a proximal pattern, we should NOT try to adjust to get a deeper pattern, as the amount of load applied on the pinion will vary during the check procedure vs being installed in the car. (in other words, once load is applied and gear actually in the car, the pattern will likely be slightly deeper than what we had)
so hopefully following what the book says will give me a long gear life.
