I can hear my 4.57's but they don't bother me AT ALL, I actually kinda like it as it is a subtle reminder that I've got gears.

As for going between 4.57's and 4.77's

just go here

http://www.turnzero.com/technical_resource...gear_calculator

you can see that 80mph with 4.57's is right at 4800rpm and with 4.77's it is at 5000. Not a HUGE difference, but noticeable nonetheless. I'd say if you want to see what 4.77's would be like, cruise on the highway in 5th, since that is within about 100rpm. Personally, for myself, the 4.57's are enough for the highway, I don't think I'd want them higher...though 200rpm isn't that big of a difference for the added performance. However countering that again, the rise going from stock to 4.57's is only 500rpm, another 200 is nearly half, and I definitly notice 500rpm, so I probably would notice another 200.

Try driving around all day never using 6th on the highway...end it at 5th and see if one, you like the power, and two, you can deal with the revs

Maybe I'm crazy, but isn't the only rational reason for whine NOT having a perfect mesh of the gears? If this is the case, won't wear be an issue long-term? It seems funny to me that everyone says "oh well, there is a little noise", yet nobody has explained why it isn't something to worry about.

whine can come from gears not meshing, but they mainly come from gears that aren't spiral/helical. i.e. your reverse gear makes a whining sound because it is straight cut (spur), not helical. That doesn't mean they aren't perfectly meshed. 4.56s are helical, but maybe for the added strength, they are thicker? so less helical?

Anyone else care to chime in?

I come from an Evo family, and i hate the whine because in my mind, once the gears starts to whine, it's going to go horribly bad soon.

so I honestly can't stand the gear whine noise. I mean, my first gear whines and I could take that, I could probably take the noise if I knew it's an ok noise and it's normal, but without being assured that the noise it makes is due to your gears being damaged and about to be out of commission, I would be very stressed out everytime I get in the car and change the fluid every 1000 miles...lol

so, anyone got a straight answer on why those gears whine?

I'm planning on getting I/H/E shortly after that even, a turbo kit for it. So noise isn't a big complaint for me. I couldn't even hear myself think in an Evo, so it's too quiet right now in the s2k.

so, 4.77? I know they're OEM gears unlike the 4.57.

Anyone auto-x with either one and wanted to go back to stock afterwards?

I have an auto-x coming up this weekend, I'm gonna go and see what the difference it might be.

thanks.

When I mentioned I could hear my whine, its only between ~45-55mph thats it everywhere else there is no whine at all.

As for its changes in racing...I'd say they would help A LOT in an autox. But I mainly road-race so for myself it took a little time to get used to, because some turns that I'd normally be entering at the top of second I now found myself in the middle of third. And other turns that I was low in 3rd I found myself much higher in 3rd. Better or worse, I can't say...just took getting used to.

i've decided to not get the gears. it's PIA. you guys can't decide on anything as a team. lol

anyway, I'm looking into Fullrace turbo kit.

i know it's... 10 times more money than gears, but at least everyone agrees on the quality and can't deny the results.

stage 2gt is what I'm looking for since I wanna auto-x too.

GT30's are fun.

here's another thought - since you have an AP1...

go with the 4.77's and if that ends up being too steep then you can upgrade to the larger AP2 rims/wheels and get back close to what the 4.56's would be.

just a thought

I have been toying with the idea to get gears too. I got to drive an AP2 with 4.56 and like the way the car felt

Everyone keeps telling me to get the 4.56 because they are more streetable than the higher 4.77 FD??? (I do track the car on occasion, but its mostly my DD)

From the responses most people with 4.77's dont sound unhappy with their purchase. If you guys had it to do over would you stay with the 4.77's or get the lower 4.56's?

Anyone have 1/4 mile or 1/8 mile timeslips with both to get an idea of the acceleration differences?

Does the fact that I have an AP2 play into what gears would be more streetable? Freeway driving between 70-80mph?

sorry for all the questions and thanks for any advice

I have 4.44's and I am thinking about upgrading. Now I see both 4.57's and 4.56's here that people have mentioned. Isnt one of these not available anymore?

Since I have 2 spare diffs, Im thinking about keeping the 4.44's, having one built with 4.57's and the last one with 4.77's. Always good to have a spare or 2.

BTW my 4.44's have whined for 2 1/2 years now and no failure yet, knock on wood.
