Default 4.56 gears

ive been searching. seems like ricks is the only place to buy the 4.56 gears? if so is the 600ish his normal price? if anyone has purchased from there did you decide to go with the oem installation part kit or did you just reuse the parts?

i was thinking 4.56 would be a little better choice for me because i do a very good amount of highway driving, but the 4.77 are in the group buy section for $330 right now.

thanks for any help. getting ready to probably pull the trigger on some gears, just needed some help in the right direction

And Hardtop Guy has an install service. It's critical that the gears be installed correctly to avoid issues down the road. If you use HTG's install service, then there is one person to go to should there be a problem. Anyone else and you run the risk of finger pointing ("the install was wrong" vs. "the gears were bad").

i wouldn't bother with cryo. it's a waste of money.

I got mine from Science of Speed (www.scienceofspeed.com)

I called, asked if it was in stock. They said yes, and shipped it out. I got it in 3 days.

They get them from Rick and offer it at the same price (I think). But the time I ordered, Rick was out of stock.

If I could do it over again, I'd probably get the 4.77 or 4.44.

why do you say you would go 4.77 over 4.56 if you did it over again?

i really would like the 4.77 i think..except i drive alot on the highway.i guess the 4.77 are only 200 rpm higher at highway speed...but thats 200 ontop of the 500 from 4.56 correct?

does highway gas milage decrease a lot with the 4.77 vs stock or is it that people just dont like having the car in that rpm range all that time'?

I say that I would go with 4.77 (or 4.44) because...

- it's 45% cheaper than the 4.56 ($330 shipped vs $590 + shipping)
- the 4.56 gear whines. the newer ones "whine less", but they still whine alot.
- ^ makes me question the quality of the gear
- i'm tired of all the 4.56 marketing hype (which doesn't justify the high price)

I don't have a problem with the car being buzzy or too high in RPM while cruising. I didn't even notice any difference from stock, because while it was stock I never bothered to look down at my rpm while I'm cruising on the highway.

If you wanted to drive like 90mph on an empty highway (stock) vs 70mph on (geared), then what's the difference? Sometimes you cruise fast, sometimes slower, but the speed you go is based more on traffic than on what rpm you want to cruise at....so long as you're not in VTEC. The car doesn't hit VTEC in 6th until 100mph w/ AP2+4.56. I cruise normally at 70-90mph.

My MPG went up after getting the gear. I think this has to do with making my way to 6th gear so fast.

Do you actually have a set 4.56 that whine?? If not, who has a set that whines more then stock?

From this post, and the timing, you have a 4.57R gear Not a 4.56 gear.

So please do not post things as fact when they clearly are not.

Thanks.

- ^ makes me question the quality of your knowledge

Richmond Gear "The Double Diamond" makes top quality ring & pinion gears.
Not just because I have a Richmond Gear 4.57-R final drive.
In all honesty I have to say I had never heard of them before owning an S2000 and reading about them here on S2ki.
According to their website they have been in the gears business for over 80 years.
Enough proof of knowledge for me.
