yeah by only what 1-1.5 lbs for a wheel that is 18x8 and 18x10. Does 1-2 lbs constitute "pretty heavy" for a wheel that is larger in diameter and much wider than stock?

Well...17x9.5 SSR Comps weigh 15.6 lbs. lbs. An 17x10 HRE weighs 22 lbs (thats the lightest one listed, other than an 8 series, which I can't find on the HRE website). Lightest Kinesis 17x10 is 18 lbs.
I could be wrong, but I can't find a three piece wheel that is near 17x10 and is under 16 lbs.
1 lbs on each corner is quite a bit....
Can you show me a really lightweight three piece rim?

a one piece forged wheel is usually a bit lighter than a 3-piece wheel of the same size. compare one piece Volk wheels, for example, to Kinesis, Fikse, or HREs of the same size.
for example, a 17x8.5 LE37T is significantly lighter than a 17x8.5 Kinesis K58. or an 18x10 TE37 is lighter than an 18x10 HRE 540.
but Kinesis, Fikse, and HRE are arguably the best wheels money can buy, regardless of the weight.

After hearing from several people experiencing it myself, I can tell you that you'll have a leak problem with your 3-pc wheels if you drive in NYC or anywhere that has roads like we do here. 
Also if people are not careful when they mount/dismount the tires, they'll also mess up the seal. I have to drive with my face stuck against the windshield so I can avoid those potholes(rim-killers), and I have to watch and instruct the people who mount/dismount the tires to be careful.

One of the things I have heard about HRE's, and this probably applies to many other three piece wheels as well, if you damage a portion of it, its pretty simple to get a replacement piece from the manufacturer sent to and then take the wheel apart and replace that one portion.

The "ultimate" wheel for any given application will be a one-piece forging to the exact specs of the car's designers.
