2x F20C's... Need opinions!
Hi guys...
So as title says... I have 2 F20's and both are busted..
Engine 1: My original motor
Dropped a valve and lost conplete compression on cylinders 2&3
Cylinders 1&2 have really low compression
Cylinder walls have scratches and cylinder 2 is chipped..
Guessing its a full rebuild.
Engine 2: a stupid purchase..
Was sleeved and had rod knock - was suspected to have bad bearings..
I bought it and took it to a rebuilder and found out they had used oem sized pistons with bigger rings, so it ended up having some play with the pistons and scratched along with walls with destroyed pistons...
Will need aftermarket rods+pistons... estimated cost is around $2k NZD + $4k of labour..
I want to have your opinion on which motor would be worth saving? I have considered bringing in a new motor from Japan but it would cost around the same as the rebuild on engine #2 if I add tax and shipping to the equation..

Not sure what the salvage car market is like in NZ, but here state side a low mile donor F22 donor motor can be had and have a decent amount of money left over. Rebuilding F20/22 motors is on the expensive side, however if there are not many donor cars in your area rebuilding may be your best option.

Well engine #2 is sleeved correct? If it is, can't you just bore it to clean up the sidewalls and throw in some oversized pistons and call it a day?
Engine #1 is toast. You could send the block out for some sleeves but you already have a block with sleeves.
Or like stated above, you could just buy a newer ap2 motor.

Yes donor engines are hard to come by in New Zealand... was thinking best to work with the sleeved motor.
Apparently oversized pistons don't exist? I called up the Honda dealership and they said there is no such thing in the system...

If its a full sleeve, you can bore and toss in any aftermarket piston. example : Wiseco

My advice - as some have stated - source a lower-mileage replacement f20/f22 and sell both of these motors. They may still be good to someone who wants them for parts or as a cheap platform to do a full build on.

Yeah apparently I will need new rods too so it supports the aftermarket pistons..
To source a F series engine would cost around the same to rebuild a built motor.
Keep bringing me your input guys! If it comes to sourcing out another F series then I'm probably gonna sell off the S :/

If machine shops are rare in NZ, that may be in the right ballpark, however the entirety of the labor is significantly lower here in the US. I assume that 4k NZD includes putting the engine into the car, if not, get a second opinion.
For machine work alone, here in the US I have received services at the following prices ~2-3 years ago:
250$ for align bore of the main bearing journals
100$ per hole for boring cylinders (400$)
100$ per hole to install a sleeve (400$ to sleeve all 4 cylinders)
100$ to deck, hot tank and clean the block
400$ to balance the rotating assembly and assemble the engine.
In total, $1550USD ($2200NZD) if you did all the work IIRC.
If I were you, I would ask a couple of machine shops for their opinion. If you can, go in person with one of the spare engines to show them. If your original engine can be salvaged with sleeve liners, it may be a cost effective option. With which, you can run OEM or aftermarket pistons. This would be less than $1000 in machine labor for your original block. (you don't need align bore for mains or to bore out the sleeves)
