2001 AP1

Timeline:
Driving normal
Stop at red-light... Green
Pull out of intersection in 1st
Shift to 2nd around 3-4k RPM and let go
clutch engages completely and i can throttle normally for a few seconds then...
POP!
Now im in neutral.
This is more than frusterating.

Okay, so 2nd gear no longer syncs up when shifting from 1st. The gear literally just pops out into neutral. I've heard the clutch has some problems on the 2001 model?

I didnt get many responses from the first post of this, I can only find things about 04+ models having this problem. Obviously I am way out of warranty, so what is the solution?

Any thoughts on what parts I should be looking for and where to get them? Price estimates please!

if only one gear is popping out and the rest are fine. i would just look into getting a used tranny on here man. replacing syncros would probably cost more than just buying a used tranny. good luck.

If you decide to go with a new tranny, you could go with a used AP2 tranny. That is a pretty common swap here.

Is a tranny swap my only real option here? I cant seem to find anyone else with this problem that has an AP1.

Im in central Oklahoma, so if anyone around this area knows a good place to take the car, please let me know.

so what's the price for the ap2 tranny, $1200? who is the supplier (honda or another)?

If it happens to be a worn or stripped gear, a rebuild would probably be an expensive job. I like the used transmission solution better. If you can obtain a used/rebuild without swapping out your present transmission and have the tools and expertise, you might be able to rebuild your present transmission and sell for a get even price. Dealing with a business though, they are almost sure to want your old trans for an exchange.
Have your transmission professionally diagnosed before spending large sums of money. The problem may have a much simpler and cheaper solution than we are talking about here.

AP2 (2004 - Present S2000s) transmission are much more than 1200 new. Closer to $3000-$4000 brand new.

You might be able to find a used one for less.

And yes, the transmission is supplied by Honda. Don't know of any aftermarket transmissions out there.

Never thought about anything aftermarket but any transmission that would bolt up to an aftermarket bellhousing/ flywheel cover and didn't require a starter relocation would work. The big problems would be the starter, the physical size (shorter or longer) and a resizing of the driveshaft. This would also probably require custom built mounts.
You could talk to a hot-rod shop and get an opinion but with their specialized skills we're no doubt talking more money than simply staying OEM. Interesting thought though, someone probably has actually done it by now.

replacing with a used transmission is usually the better choice, synchros are not expensive just labor + worn synchros does not cause your gear to pop out. It's either the dogteeth or your gears itself is worn which are the expensive parts. Good luck on everything!
