2nd gear grind
well i did 2 pulls today from a 20 roll and when i shifted from 1st to 2nd it grinded. i have never grinded the tranny before so i was a little worried. and what worried me more was it did it twice. on both of the pulls through 1st gear. my clutch is slipping so i didnt know if that had anything to do with it. anything? i didn some rolls through 2nd gear and shifting into third there was no grinding, just clutch slippage. and i was driving the car hard, all the way to redline. thanks for the help guys!!

well the clutch slipping is a major issue, it is likely the cause of the tranny issue. Tranny grinding doesn't just go from perfect to bad that fast, so I'd suspect the clutch issue. I normally recommend a tranny fluid change in shifting issues, but since you mentioned the clutch problem that is the best place to start.

What fluid did you use? I got a few gear grinds every now and then using the GM Synchromesh, but the transmission has been perfect since going to Honda's own new MT fluid.

This is a common issue with the ap1's, I wouldnt be too worried about it. The problem is between the brass synchros, and the fact that there is such a drop between 1st and 2nd gear (in terms of rpms). So when you try to shift really quickly sometimes you are actually shifting too fast for the synchros in which case it will grind and not go into gear.
I would assume that when you were doing this you were trying to bang through the gears pretty quickly correct? It has happened to me probably 8-10 times in my ap1 in about a yr, so just try to slow down the 1-2 shift just a tad and you should be fine, and also make sure the tranny is FULLY warmed up before banging 1-2 as well.
Hope this helps.

I agree with kelz12. This is a common problem with AP1s. I screwed up my first tranny as a result of severe 1st-2nd grind. My gears still grind when I try shifting too fast between 1st and 2nd, but I've learned to shift slower.
There's plenty of advice around here about eliminating the grind -- changing fluid, changing your grip on the shift knob, etc. -- and some of these may work for others. However, the only thing that's worked for me is shifting slow between 1st and 2nd. I've never had a problem grinding other gears, regardless of how fast I shift through them.
