2nd cat clogged, replacement 950!
My car wouldn't pass smog after I bought it. Honda took it in and replaced it with a "new" cat at 68k miles. Now, my car is giving me problems. Took it to a mechanic and he said your cat is clogged. This cat is 1 and a half years old. I only have 82k miles now. BARELY used. I called Honda, and the mechanic, they said a replacement cat is 950$. Is there a reason my Cat keeps clogging or going bad? Is there any cheaper replacement. I live in california so hi flow cats are illegal

What kind of problem is your car giving you? you should check your cat with a infrared thermometer just to be sure the mechanic is telling you the truth. Get the temperature reading before the cat and after the cat. The reading after the cat should be lower than the reading before the cat. If the reading is the same or higher than the reading before the cat, then your cat is bad.
Replacing the cat wont fix your problem. You need to fix whatever is causing your cat to go bad. Is the cel on? Hookup a scan tool and see if there are any codes store in the ecu.

car is in the shop, the car was idling funny. It would seem like the motor is dying then it would kick back up. CEL came on for 5 mins.I let the car sit for 6 months and it worked fine. Mechanic took off the cat and the car ran fine...

I'd tell Honda to go **** themselves. There should be some sort of a mileage warranty on the cat.. I'd try going to another dealership and tell you why the cat keeps going bad and have them replace it for you. Only speak with a service manager though, The mechanics/front desk won't give you the time of day unless your persistent about it..

If you haven't changed your O2 sensors yet, this could be causing your catalyst failures:

I'll be changing mine this morning. I planned on doing this last summer when I noticed my UOA's starting to show higher fuel dilution and my Actron Auto scanner showed the sensors to be sluggish. But when I had it on jack stands, I realized it would be easier to do on a lift since the wire stowage was pretty complicated. It goes into a shop today.

What was the cel? Did you happen to check out the cat to see if its actually clog.
