Default 2008 S2k Buzzing from Engine/Trans while Decelerating

Hello everyone,

My car:
2008 S2000
Mileage: 10763 Miles only (Bought with only 8200 miles about 1 year ago) I only drive it on weekends
Im the second owner.

Problem:
While decelerating in 2nd or 3rd gear, I hear the gears buzzing. Is this even possible? I know Honda put a bulletin (00-054) out on Nov. 27, 2001, but wouldn't you think Honda put the revised clutch disc in my car?

I believe I still have the 5 year powertrain warranty. So, I guess I can get the dealer to fix it (even though I hate the fact that they're gonna take it out for a joy ride)

Does anyone have this same problem with their ap2?

First off, I am not a mechanic. Hopefully we'll get someone who is to weigh in. In the meantime, here is my assessment based on inductive reasoning:

I'm 99% sure this is normal for 2 reasons: 1) my MY03 does this as well when engine braking (what you're describing) and it should have the updated disc mentioned in the TSB just like yours (notice that it's for MY00-01). 2) If you read the TSB it mentions that this is basically normal, it is just made louder with the older style disc. Here is what I am referring to:

"BACKGROUND
Clearance between transmission gears (backlash) is
normal and sometimes audible. In an S2000, this noise
is more noticeable since the transmission is between
the seats instead of up front in the engine
compartment. When the vehicle decelerates, its
weight, together with the pulses from the engine,
excites the transmission gears, causing them to buzz
or rattle.

The four springs in the clutch disc hub act as a damper.
The clutch disc listed in this service bulletin is an
improved version of the countermeasured disc
released a year ago. Extensive testing has shown it to
be quieter than any previous S2000 clutch discs.
If your customer had the previous clutch disc installed
but still complains of deceleration noise, install the
clutch disc listed in this service bulletin."

As it says, it's going to happen and you will probably hear it based on how the s2k is designed, but it's normal.

BUT if you fear that there is something seriously wrong, you're the only one who can hear it to assess at this point and you should trust your instincts. Better safe than sorry.

Did the previous owner upgrade the clutch at all? Many aftermarket Discs have yet to correct the issue that leads to Clutch Buzz... Something to think about.

I dont think its anything serious. It's not obnoxiously loud or anything.

Maybe I'm being just too picky. But then again, i should be since i worked hard to buy this car.

Im just going to have to ride in someone else's s2k.

I don't know if the previous owner upgraded the clutch. I bought the car at the dealership and everything was stock and fresh looking.

I still would like to see if anyone here has this problem with their low mileage/fairly new car. So, anyone else please feel to chime in here. Thanks for the replies everyone

When I first bought my S2K, I thought s**t this transmission is noisy. And like you I posted on here for help. I have read many threads with people saying the same. I replaced my original clutch with an aftermarket part which removed 90% of my "clutch buzz". In my opinion the vibration that causes the "clutch buzz" is just how they are, changing the friction plate as per TSB will only improve the sound and not ever remove it altogether, as the cause/vibration is generated elsewhere. As a second opinion I booked my car in with my local Honda dealer before doing my clutch. When on the test drive, the technician was not concerned by the general transmission noise but did confirm the "clutch buzz". It would also be my guess that some transmissions will be noisier/quieter than others even though both are in perfectly usable condition.

Yes it sounds like that, especially in the second video from at 10 seconds.

I guess its normal. Kinda odd, but I guess we'll have to get use to it. Thanks for the video by the way.
