2005 ecu upgrades for STR
Anyone know if the internals of a 2006 ECU can be installed in a 2005 ECU box? For STR it doesn't seem possible and legal. Rules state that internals can be modified, but the stock box has to be used. Are the harness plugs the same? Hondata of course has a great solution for early cars, but all of the people I've asked say it's not legal. I guess J's can reflash the stock unit, but I'm a little concerned about a "generic flash". Vehicle would also have to pass emmissions tests, so fuel trim under say 3000rpm 's couldn't be messed with. Or just sell the 2005 and buy a 2006(which is easily reprogramable)? Thanks--Guy

An 06 ECU won't work in your car, as 06-up are DBW and your car is cable-actuated.
As far as I know, the only way to reflash a pre-05 ECU is to crack the unit open, pull the chip that houses the stock maps, and find someone that can reprogram it. Not sure who does that, though, or what ridiculous amount it might cost.

Huge thread in the R&C forum about STR with lots of builds and info. Well over 40 pages of great info.:

Guy, so many systems were changed in the 06 when they went with the more powerful ECU. The new ECU not only controls engine management, it also controls a lot of emissions functions that the older cars didn't. For it to work, you would have to replace sensors in the engine, which would be illegal. Best way for an 04-05 is to get an AP1 ECU for the increased RPMS and use a VAFC to control VTEC changeover and A/F ratios. Or just trade in your car for an 06+.
