I'm checking out what it takes to convert the gears and secondary in an '00-'03 gearbox to the '04 setup. A new '04 will cost $3k+ while an '03 may sell for $700 plus parts, say $700, and labor, say $600. That would save 30% or more.
Sounds good! Please keep us posted on what you find out.

I would love to just have the '04 6th gear set for my '02 tranny. That would make my 4.77s much more enjoyable. However, aren't there multiple gears on a single shaft? Is it possible to change just one gear?

I asked the same question about swapping transmission a few months ago.

It turns out there is only on gear changed in the transmission, the secondary gear reducer. swapping out that gear will change the ratios for 1st to 3rd by 6% I think.

So if someone has a part breakdown of the transmission. we can check if it will swap out.

But i guess it will be alot of work openning up the transmission.

The '04 transmission has shorter reduction gear and taller 5th and 6th gear.

I like it because you get the more mechanical advantage on the lower "track use" gears, while 6th reduces RPM on highway cruising. IMHO, exactly what a dual use street/track S2000 needs.

Waiting for the first '04 to hit the junkyard.....

Guys, I bought my 04 tranny for $1600 from Japanese Engines off of E-bay. They had a 04 engine and tranny together. He separtated them for me and gave me a great deal. I found two others from a search on the web. One had 3k on it for $2250 and the other one was $2250. I checked last week and I found another one for $3200.

There are plenty of 04s on the scrap heap already.

Hi gang
I just checked this website
http://www.vtec.net/articles/view-ar...icle_id=146907

I think the first 4 gears were incorrectly posted in the table between the 03 and 04 models. They are 4% difference but the numbers are the same according to the gear table.

I am looking for the 2nd and 3rd gear ratio for the MY00 gear box.
Could someone plez help?

The Honda dealer put in new 5th and 6th gears in my 04 tranny. I have an 01 car. He compared the 01 case and internals to the 04 and said that the case inside the 04 tranny is different than the 01-03. 2004 gears and syncros will not fit into the 01-03 case.

The only thing he had to add was a new slave cylinder to the 04 tranny to make it work.

I have a JDM 04 tranny and there was a big difference in the feel of the 01 tranny.

It is a great combo. 04 Tranny, Comptech rearend housing, KAAZ LSD, 4.57s, ACT clutch, toda lightened flywheel, Comptech S/C with underdrive pulley.

Off the line is better and rpms in 6th reduced about 500 rpms.

The gear ratios of the individual 1st through 4th gears are indeed identical - it's the secondary reduction gear that was changed to be shorter. (5th and 6th gears were changed individually as well.)
