I contacted him through PM a few months back and his comment was that it was "the best of both worlds".

I had seen him respond to a thread regarding how he had picked up his 04 so I PM'ed him to ask his opinion on which he liked better...his 03 or 04. He said that his first choice would be the 00-03 car with the upgraded 04 drivetrain.
Thanks for the info. I should look into this upgrade sometime down the road.

also, the major benefits of going with an 04' diff or tranny is that the 04' diff is supposedely stronger, and the 04 tranny has carbon syncros.

I wonder if the F20C in '04 cars not in the US use the 2.2 tranny?

According to the www.honda.co.jp website, the '04 JDM S2000s have the exact same gear ratios as the '00-'03. (They do have the updated carbon synchros, though.)

In fact, there are only three ways that the US '04 transmission differs from the older ones. 1st) Secondary reduction gear changed from 1.160 to 1.208. 2nd) 5th gear changed from 0.970 to 0.943. 3rd) 6th gear changed from 0.810 to 0.763. There were NO changes made to 1st through 4th - the difference we all see is in the secondary reduction gear. StinkyTofu, that's actually incorrect - the gear spacing (at least for 1st to 4th) is exactly the same for each version.

Some details: http://www.vtec.net/articles/view-ar...icle_id=146907

CrazyPhuD is correct, by the way, in that those same first four gears, the '04 transmission is like a stock '03 running 4.270 rear gears. It's only a very small change... 4%, compared to a 4.77 gears 14% change.

If you need a new transmission anyway, go for the '04, sure. But if your existing '00-'03 works fine, I think you're looking at an extremely small bang for your buck.

Yep.

Hmmm, and '03 car with an '04 transmission and 4.56 rear gears will have 14% short 1st through 4th gears (same as 4.77 otherwise stock), but only 8% shorter 6th.

Have the '04 transmission installed. I like it a lot. I'm on the hunt for an '04 or '03 differential to put gears into it. I think that I'll try the 4.44 initially.

I sent a PM to Woodwork asking for his advice but he did not answer. I guess that I'm on his shit list.
Go with the '04 diff, it's substantially stronger than the '03 and earlier diffs. I just installed an '04 diff in my

My 01 tranny went bad at 29k. I purchased a 04 tranny and had Honda put it in. They only told me that the slave cylinder had to be changed. I have 4.57s in my car and the mechanic told me it is awesome. He had driven the car with the Supercharger and the old tranny and he says it is a lot better.

I went with the Comptech reinforced rearend,KAAZ LSD, and 4.57s. All COLDfired treated.

The web site does mention the tranny gearing. To solve some confusion here is a paste from the Honda website.

Gears 1-4 = 4% lower for performanceGear
5 = 1% lower
Gear 6 = 2% higher

I don't get home to drive it until the 14th but I will post my reactions.

Anyone know what my new gearing will be with 4.57s, 265 35 18's
