2004 Honda s2000 valve adjustments-Honda Dealers
Anyone that have a lot of knowledge please let me know.
I called Honda today about when is the schedule maintence on a 2004 honda s2000
The mechanic told me that it doesn't need to be adjusted until it start making wierd noises.
I ask him can you double check that and he ask the other mechanic there and i can hear him from the back ground saying it doesn't need to be adjusted until it makes wierd noises. BTW my has 60000K miles on it.
Now i have a question for the GURUs...... If the valve are not adjusted the engine will run poorly to my understanding......? So should i do it anyway so it would run better... before it makes noises.....?
If the valves are a little off it will still run somewhat poorly so why do i have to wait until it make noises?

It's not "factory" recommended until 105K or until it is making noise.
The valve clearance increases with time, unless the engine has another problem such as a sunken valve seat which can reduce the clearance.
Even at 105K most are pretty close to the standard.

I work at honda and on all major services we inspect valve clearance by ear. You'll hear your valves ticking. If needed we'll recommend it. I've had cars come in at 120k plus with perfect valve clearance.

Inspecting by ear does not equal "perfect" valve clearance.
At my dealership when a customer is paying for a valve clearance inspection we actually put a feeler gauge between all the valve and rockers.

I never said it was perfect. I just said I've seen cars with near perfect clearance. It's plain and simple if it's ticking. We do not charge if we don't do any work. How much do you guys charge to inspect valves?

$$$ Depends on the car. For the most part cars with light valvetrains (like civics) are less prone to be out of spec than others.
A sunk or burned valve seat will equal reduced clearance and no noise. Depending how bad the valve seal is, may not present any running problems.
There are too many variables to guarantee valve clearance by ear only.

Well different dealerships work differently. We charge a hour plus parts to put a feeler gauge to anything. We don't feel like charging someone if they don't need it. And yes cars that are prone for the problems you stated we do a little more. Come on it's a 2004 s2000 with 60,000.
