I was trying to explain to somebody on Honda-Tech that the '02s make a bit more horsepower because the ECU was tweaked. Steve C (the same one on this board) replied with "No it was not. That's just an internet myth that's getting out of hand." What's the real story?

Steve C really doesn't have a clue what he's talking about in this case. The 2002's are _consistently_ showing more power on the dyno. We're up to over half a dozen examples of stock 2002s (with all sorts of mileage) vs. 4 stock 2000-2001 models and the average hp is consistently 5 hp higher on the 02.

Pete bought an OBD-II scanner and one day at the dyno he captured ignition data on Larrys turbo '00, my SC '00 and his SC '02.
the '00 turbo had coolest AIT because of the intercooler, and had the lowest advance figures.
even though Pete was running cooler AIT numbers than I was, except for one short area ( i believe from different VTEC engagement points) he was always 1 - 5 degrees more advanced than i was.
this has to be from the ECU, which as Gernby has stated, are different part numbers, meaning they changed something. maybe the change was not significant enough for Honda to change all their marketting materials to let everyone know about the increase.

I think the reason that Honda wouldn't want to publicize a slight increase for the '02 has to do with their image. I don't think Honda would want to admit that the '00-'01 software was inferior to the '02. I think that would make them look bad. All of the publicized HP increases I'm aware of from Honda has always been due to "improvements" in hardware (intake / exhaust manifolds, etc.). If it had been publicized, there would probably be a lot of public demand for software updates.
