I think he's saying that he has an indicator on the dash or something that says he needs to change the oil? I don't believe the S2K came with that?

To the OP, I believe CKit is saying that you take whatever mileage you have and add 3000miles to whatever mileage you have so you now what mileage to change your oil at. Also depending on the life of your oil the "3000miles" would change.
No. That's NOT what I'm saying. Did you even click the link?

Early S2000s had a "Maint req'd" light that was a counter. Every 3000 miles it'd go off.

Later S2000s had a % oil life left. It was a calculator (like the link describes) that calculates oil wear by logging your use patterns.

For example, on our CR that is mainly highway driven it took 4500 miles before the "15%" oil life light went on.

For the K and N filter you, need to re-oil it after you clean it. Just get the K&N cleaning kit (cleaner + oil), its 10 bucks off amazon.

^ You cannot just wash it, it will need to be re-oiled to be effective. Do NOT over oil though. Like dammitjim said, the kit will last a long time. Buying the kit is much cheaper than buying another K&N filter. Cleaning the K&N properly will help it to run like new.

My wife's '09 CR-V has put ~12,000 miles on since the last change, and the maintenance minder just now indicated only 15% remaining oil life. The owners manual doesn't require synthetic (though I use Mobil 1). While I'd never let a performance engine go that long, I'm lazy and gonna follow the CR-V's maintenance minder.

My '05 is totally old school...no stability control, no outside temp reading, no maintenance minder...so old school I practically have to gap the points ;-)
