I think any brand name oil to top off before the first oil change should be fine. No one knows the exact formulation that Honda is using anyway. More important to maintain an adiquate fill.
At the first oil change, things will be different. You'll know exactly the brand an weight in your crankcase and will be able to top off with this same exact product.

have any of you guys noticed a difference after the first oil change(sounds, idling, running condition, etc.)? i plan on changing mine at 5k, but curious to see how the engine is gonna run with the old breakin oil out.

no difference. i went with a odd mix of 3 qts Max Life and 2+ qts regular valvoline and 1/2 bottle of synpower oil treatment.
i will eventually switch to synthetic when my mileage allows.

I waited until the maintenance minder light came on. It happened after I got to 5k miles. I didn't know I was supposed to wait until 7.5k...
I read that the switch to synthetic should not happen until after 10k, so I will wait until the third change most likely to go full syn.

With the S2K now out of production for 1+ years, you probably didn't expect this thread to resurface. First, I have been searching through many threads over the past few weeks and am only bringing this one back because I couldn't locate something similar to what I have a question about. Here goes:

I have a 2008 that was purchased new last November. It was a dealer trade and sat on the showroom floor for over 400 days. The car had 100 miles on the odometer when I took delivery and now, six months later, I just broke the 1,600 mile mark today. (I know, just drive the car). There has been no oil consumption to date and the maintenance minder reads 70%. As you know, the manual suggests changing the oil when the MM gets in the 10-15% range (as I recall) or one year, whichever is sooner. My car was manufactured in 12/07 so the oil has been in the car for almost 2.5 years. I don't believe that oil degrades over time and I don't know if there is a risk of moisture, etc., building up over time. So, shall I wait for the MM to indicate a much lower reading or just get the oil and filter changed now? I will use dino oil and a Honda filter for the time being as, from what I have read, there seems to be a consensus (if you can call it that) to wait until +- 10,000 miles to switch to synthetic. I have wanted an S2K since it was introduced in 2000 and plan on keeping my 2008 for a long, long time. As you can see, it is not my daily driver. Thanks in advance for your candid feedback.

Well, all good questions and I don't believe there's an exact answer. Personally, I'd continue with the factory fill until 5k+. There is a one sentence statement in the '06 owners manual "Do not be too quick to change out the original oil" (paraphrased") which implied to me that the break-in oil is perhaps a special formulation. Many of us adhered to this advise and probably as many or more didn't.
The end game though is that your going to have to make this decision for yourself. If you would feel better changing out the original fill then this is perhaps what you should do.

Another Oil debate? FWIW.....here's what I do to ALL my cars.

Change Oil & Filter every 5K
Baster out Brake & Clutch fluid every 5k(use Prestone Dot4)
Clean & Re-oil K&N every 5k
Change Trans & Diff Every 15k
Change Coolant every 24 mos(Prestone)

I use Penn Plat 5-30 in all cars
I use Wix Oil Filters in all cars(S2K=#51334)
Trans=Honda MTF
Diff in all Cars=Amsoil Severe Gear 75-90

As always,IMO
