Default 1st oil change!

for the first oil change, when should I do it and what kind of oil should I put in. do I really need synt oil? all I see in the owners manual is to check the maintenance manual that by the way is about 75 bucks.

I'd wait till 5k-7k , and keep with regular oil, not syn. Wait till 10k for the syn.

BUT...do check it at every fuel stop. A new s2k can burn lots of oil when it's new, enough to destroy the engine. And it will not be covered, because the manual tells you to do so

Can't remember exactly where I saw it but I think it's in the OM and the emphisis seems to be on leaving the original oil in up to the full recommended 7500miles.
Like you, I'm a little anxious and would rather change it a little earlier.
The break-in oil appearently is a special formulation and should remain in the crankcase as long as possible.
I think I'm going to compromise a little though and do the first change between 6500-7000.
Synthetic or non, I haven't decided yet. It probably doesn't make a huge difference one way or the other.

wait a minute. how do you know if the oil is dark if you dont even know where the dipstick is

and yeah, definitley keep an eye on the oil level. i'm almost hitting 2k miles, checked it today, and saw it was near the lower X. i topped it off with some high mileage valvoline oil. do not put in full synthetic until/after 10k. stated many times before, everything within the engine is still being seating/broken in even after 5k miles.

from what i've read, the oil% life reading comes from a few things....of course mileage, but primarily, the way the car is driven, for example: someone that redlines continiously will get to 0% quicker than someone that doesnt redline as much even when they are at the same mileage. i'm at 70% sitting at almost 2k miles, and i think i have a lot % left do to the fact that i had a trip from chicago to va. beach, about a 900 mile trip. all freeway speeds.

On my MY06, the 15% came on at around 5k. It insisted I change it because every time I toggled it out of the way to get my display back and shut the car off, it came back as soon as I'd start the car.

So my first oil change was at 5k with a K&N filter. I did the second one at 3750 after and the % was at 40. Going to do filter every other time. It seems the % runs ~5k miles, at least on my car. I drive really hard and autox, canyon run regularily. But I'm going to stick to 3750 from now on.

I have not burned any oil at all.

Also, I would change the transmission and diff fluids at 5k as well. They were nasty.

Reset your minder if you change stuff early. I had code 1A first time and 1B second time. Those are listed in your book.

You might be able to run your oil 5-7k but it is recommended to change you filter around 3k. The cleaner the better IMO.

Remember the three jobs of oil:
Clean
Lubercate
Cool.
