12,000 rpm

12,000 rpm
whats up guys, about 2 months ago i was redlined in 3rd and slammed into 2nd on accident. car has been running good, however all the reading i have done on this site has made me very very paranoid about a cracked retainer and down the line dropping a valve. I was under the impression that you would either float the valves on an overev or not.
Anyway i bought 16 oem retainers and 32 oem (keepers) or cotters. And I am having them installed today, and i will get all my old parts back to see if any of them did have cracks. Everything is costing me 500 bucks parts included.
what i heard is that you can pull the valve cover off and see in there with a mirror however to really see the parts good the cams need to come out, so my thinking was hell just replace everything so i can get that warm fuzzy feeling back again. I hope i needed to do this and that i just didnt throw money down the drain. anyways i will keep you guys posted on what we find.

This is DEFINITELY a good idea. 12,000 RPM's is a lot and 500 is cheap insurance for the motor, seeing as a rebuild is like 5 times that. Please keep us posted in this thread when you get the stock parts back and check for cracks.
On a sidenote, did you replace it with AP1 or AP2 retainers?

I did a rebuild for a misshift like that, they actually broke the tip of the valve.
.....
while pulling apart the rest of head, just about every retainer on the intake side was cracked on the underside, couldn't even tell from the top.

According to billman's write-ups, you can't see the cracks on the top-side but you can see if they are not level with the others. Comparission seems to be a way to check.

No matter what retainers you used (ap1 or ap2) it was a smart move. If the ap2's are stronger, its not going to be stronger to the point it will take that kind of abuse (I don't think anyway). You made a smart move and might have saved yourself thousands of dollars!

Might want to check for valve damage - at 12,000 rpm they were most certainly floating (I don't know if there's a way to check without removing the head)
- Check the spark plugs for evidence of oil fouling, too lean mixture or too rich mixture.
- Maybe a leak down test.
