I did notice the difference, going from a Shell 0W-40 to Shell 0W-30.

And I will never go back.

IMO the F2x was designed around a 30 weight, as most (maybe all) Honda car engines are (before the 20 weights became available)

Honda "in Europe" does not call for a 40 weight.

The 5W-40 is in every S2000 owners manual as an option for lower temperatures because of the 5W, not because of the 40.

Oh well...

I'm not talking about the owners manual.
There is an oil application list directly from Honda, I'm not sure if it applies for all Europe but I would be surprised if there was more than one list.

To be honest it doesn't look Honda "official", more like a list created by an individual Honda dealership for internal reference.
So I think there is some personal opinion in that list, but I like the SAE 90 for the S2000 diff
You would not be the first to think the F2x engine, this high revving, high spec output "race" engine needs thick oil.
The opposite is true, as thicker oil will make the pump bypass open sooner = less oil through your engine when you need it most @ 9000 rpm.


I'm going to stick to the official Honda S2000 owners manual and use a 30 weight.

The list is from Honda HQ in Sweden, I think it was meant mostly for internal use but they have been sharing it for at least 6 years now.
I'm certainly not a believer in using a thicker oil than absolutely needed, the list makes me a bit uncomfortable about using lower viscosity though.
I have read your great thread about 30 weight and think it makes sense, btw if possible please update the pictures.
I'm installing an oil temp sensor now so if see the temps at the track looks good I will probably try something -30

I would use the oil temps to help you fine tune your viscosity choice when it comes to track use. If the temps start to climb a 40 weight might be a consideration, or you could consider a thicker weight 30 as there is lots of variation between 30 weight oils. As everyone knows oil thins as temps increase.

FWIW, I see very little difference in oil pressure readings between a 30 weight oil and a 40 weight oil once it is fully hot. There is more of a difference when the oil is cold, but when fully hot I see a difference of maybe 2 psi max. I expected to see more of a difference but I have not seen it.

Interesting observation there zero, which oils was it that you tested?
I would like to check the tech sheet for their measured viscosity.

I have run Castrol Edge Titanium 10w30, Castrol Edge 5w40, Red Line 5w30, and currently running Red Line 5w40. Lots of viscosity variation in their spec sheets, but not much of a difference in hot oil pressure readings on my car.

A 0w-30, 5w-30, and 10w-30 are all going to have the same viscosity at operating temperature.

The list is not wrong, just not complete, a 30 weight is the standard oil, a 5W oil is recommended for lower outside temps.
That is the message between-the-lines in the owners manual.
An oil pressure sensor might be more valuable in a track car.
