Hi:

Just bought a used '06 with 12k miles. I'm new to S2K's, but have done SCA and PCA stuff for years. Normally go through a car pretty thoroughly when I get it.

This one seems to run fine; sounds a little valve noisy when cold. Looks as if the valves can be adjusted pretty easily, per archives. Typically required?

Is a shop manual available on line? CD purchasable?

Anything else to look for? (I will check for cracked VS retainers, though it is Honda quiet when warm).

I bought a Helms for my 06 through Helms, you can do that, or check the library in the UTH section as I think there is a write up somewhere.

Our engines don't "require" valve adjustments until 105k miles. Our valvetrains are much noisier than most cars which is normal for our engine.

They are pretty noise, almost as noise as my singer special accord motor.


I did an adjustment at 100k and most of the valve lash are off, it sounds much smoother now.

just regular wrench/ tool, you need hex, torque wrench, the blade/guage, flat head

Compared it to another car, chances are it's normal. The valvetrain will always make some noise, even when properly adjusted. Cold engines make more noise as the valve clearances are larger than when hot.

This is not true. According to the Honda service manual the valves require adjusting whenever they are noisy. AP1 heads should be have regular valve adjustment checks along with examing the valves, springs, seats for any damage. A new head is expensive but the entire block is even more.

I think he's trying to say that normal/most of the S are fine for the first 100k then we need a major check/adjust after that.

of course you can adjust it anytime you feel there's something wrong

Try some full synthetic 10W30 motor oil. This worked for me and some other owners. Valvoline MaxLife synthetic and Pennzoil Platinum have worked for me. I haven't had any valvetrain noise since switching. Good luck.

I had mine done on my AP1 at 30k, I'll probably have my AP2 done at the end of next season (~18-20k mi).....it can only help

Yeah, and it's not very hard to do.

I just do my integras and S2ks valves at the same time.
