Because the shifter is perfectly (IOW, not with cables or any other sloppy stuff) mechanically linked to the shift forks you feel a lot of mechanical things happening inside the gearbox =>
That mechanical feeling is often being described as notchy.
Sounds normal to me
While shifting at low revs I usually shift slow and take a split second pause in the "neutral" position and then gently push it in gear.

It is upshift to 2nd and/or third, so no revmatching. Usually during traffic driving (i.e. low revs). It doesn't matter if it's cold start or not. It's not a full-on grind, but I can hear it grind for 1 second.
