The best recommendation to minimize the occurance of grinding 1st to 2nd is to:
1) maintain enough leftward pressure when pulling down.
2) If you did #1, you'll reach an indent where you pause for a split second, then go into 2nd. This is the real key.
Some S2Ks trannies are more forgiving than others. For the ones with the occasional grind, you just have to be that more precise.
However, there should be no excuse by Honda if you do this and it still grinds.
If is funny though, mine shifts butter smooth up in the 7000-9000rpm range, more so than when under 4000rpm.

I've been shifting quickly and easily since I put in the Redline oil.
No grinds at all and I've been hammering the 1-2 shift just to determine if it really is fixed. The transmission just works right, finally.
No need to consult a lengthy checklist before doing a shift.
- Not going over a bump. Check!
- Clutch pedal fully down. Check!
- Wait precisely one second. Check!
- Lever to the left. Check!
- This is no fun. Check!

I had the same thing happen in my acura cl type-s and after about 5k it went away. I also have the same thing in the s 2000 that I hope will go away. I think the tranny has to be broken in.

I don't think it gets better either. The more you grind the more it compounds. The dog teeth will round off then you'll grind very often.
I personally think you need to make the 2nd gear synchros work a bit from time to time with some high rpm shifts, to keep them grippy. It is like having an apple a day
