Default '00-'01 vs. '02+ ECU. What exactly is different?

I heard the timing/fuel is more agressive on the 02+, but what exactly is the difference?
Also, I recently bought a S2000 ECU from a local junk yard but they couldn't tell me what year
the ECU is. Is there a way I can tell by looking at the ECU? I looked at the label and open the cover,
but couldn't find anything on/in it.
