what i would recommend is find an empty lot and push the car to its limit so you understand and feel when it occurs. Get to know all the characterestics and you'll become much more comfortable on the streets.

Dont forget to let the tires warm up !!!!!!!!!!
Only time I had the rear end come out is when I tried to take a corner as fast as I normally do but with cold tires , she started to spin and I caught it and went about my way.

Exactly go to an autocross. I went for the first time last weekend and I didn't drive I just went to see what it was all about. Next time I will try it but not racing for time, I more want to see how far you can push the car till it starts to spin. I have only had it get loose on me once and it was totally recoverable, but it was my fault, turned too sharp and gave it too much gas.
Common sense here, don't be too concerned I think the main message is be careful, cuz this isn't your grandma's Corolla.
Have fun but drive safe.

Depends on the state you live in, I believe. Typically parking lots are private property and the police can't write you a ticket. You need to do this testing to:
1. Figure out what the limits of your car are in a steady state (cornering without changing gas, or braking). This is when you'll learn how the car 'feels' at the limits, so you can tell when you're approaching them later on.
2. Figure out how to correct for the resulting oversteer, without spinning.
3. Then work on how it feels, and what happens during rapid changes in gas or braking, esp. in a corner. This is the final learning, since this will simulate real world driving. Doing this in a parking lot or at an autocross will allow you to learn how to correct the problem and survive.
BTW, if you autocross, I would try to spin the car. It's a safe place to do it, and you'll gain alot of understandings about your car for the road.
Good luck.
