I actually have a pair of each in a different brand and I tend to use the smaller ones simply cause it means less I have to jack up when doing a small project. On bigger projects though the taller ones are really nice to work with.

hmm...so what size would I need most if I did trans, differential, and engine old change? Also maybe brake job. thanks

the smaller size would work fine and then you dont have to jack the car up as much to get them on the stands.

I agree--the smaller ones are more than strong enough (6000lb each) and 17 inches of total height is actually a lot--plus the smaller ones will be easier to store (I have 2 sets of the smaller ones and they work fine for everything from my S2K to my pickup)

Don't even need anything that nice/fancy/expensive, IMO. I have two pairs of these from Sears, $20/pr (and no shipping.)
